Red Ron on… education

In Red Ron’s answer to Tory Tim, he says we all must pay for education equally.

My friend Tim would have teachers horse-whipped for not getting their pupils through their qualifications – and shot if it happened again. Schools would have to raise funds through jumble sales with the lucky ones having rich philanthropists to help out.

This of course is a typical Tory idea which would very quickly leave schools with no teachers. It doesn’t really get to grips with the fundamental inequalities of education system.

Entitled
All our young people are entitled to a proper education, and not just those that can afford to buy it. The richest in society should pay to better the education of everyone, not to maintain an elitist system to benefit their own progeny.

Arguably, the best educational system in Europe is the French Model. Every child receives the same education, even down to at the same time across the whole country, with a minuscule number going to fee-paying schools.

French children progress through the system on merit alone. Having been to a ‘good school’ should not enable a candidate for any walk of life to surpass an equally qualified but state educated one.

Teachers
Teachers and university professors are respected. Educators are not treated as two different classes – private sector and state – but all of one. This is what we in the UK should be aiming for.

Our teachers should be supported in the way that, at the moment, they are not. Under Gove, where a teacher is ‘bad’ (whatever that means) they can be dismissed. Pupils are not identikit exam passers, but all need support, guidance and mentoring to gain the qualifications.

Surely it is more effective to ascertain what the pupils need to get through their courses and then assist them in that – not get rid of a trained teacher?

Councils
The process under way right now is effectively depriving local councils of control over schools and budgets which will have an ongoing deleterious effect. Schools will suffer as will teachers, who will live in fear of expulsion, and pupils who will face growing disruption to their work.

Funding will become so constrained that some councils will face the reality of shedding staff that look after the schools department.

Universities
In the Higher Education sector some universities have opted to take as much money as they can from their students, which will leave many destitute for years. Some are even closing departments that are not seen as ‘profitable’ enough.

Our universities need to expand their offerings to bring in more students and ensure that those from disadvantaged homes are offered the same chances as the son of Lord Snooks who went to Winchester, Harrow or Eton.

Wellington, the victor of Waterloo, famously said that the battle was won on the playing fields of Eton. It’s time that every pupil had the same opportunity.

I don’t know if anyone remembers Mad magazine and Alfred E.Neuman, but they did a spoof once on famous sayings. Wellington’s was in response to the question ” Which was the toughest fight you were ever in?” His reply was ” The Battle of Waterloo was one. On the playing fields of Eton, however, it got really nasty…”
